Taking care of our Members – we’re here to support you

10th July 2020

Dear Valued Member,

With lockdown restrictions continuing to ease, it’s encouraging to see that so many businesses are re-opening. The Chancellor’s announcement on 8th July of schemes to create and protect jobs, as well as the introduction of temporary changes to stamp duty and a £2 billion ‘green homes’ grant scheme, should hopefully provide a welcome boost to the economy.

However all this said, normality still appears to be some way off.

During this uncertain period, I want to assure you that Leek United Building Society remains as committed as ever to supporting you. We’re here to help in any way we can and I’d like to take this opportunity to update you on our continuing work to assist you, our staff and the local community.

I know many of you rely heavily on our branches. I’m therefore delighted that all our branches and agencies remain open for essential services, as they have done since the outbreak of Covid-19. In order to protect our staff, we’re operating on reduced hours - you’ll find the latest opening hours for each of our branches here. We’re continuing to dedicate the first hour each day to our elderly and vulnerable customers.

We’re constantly monitoring the latest Covid-19 developments and government guidance and we have appropriate social distancing measures in place to keep everyone safe in line with our formal risk assessments. We would be grateful if you could help us by only visiting our branches when it’s essential to do so – please consider the alternative, and often simpler, ways of dealing with us below. If your visit is necessary, we respectfully ask you to wear a face covering.

We’ve enhanced our telephone and online support services so you can now do more of your financial management over the phone or online, rather than having to come into a branch. You can contact us regarding support with payments and we can help you with all your mortgage, savings, home insurance and financial planning needs from the comfort of your home. Of course we continue to offer telephone appointments to help you in these areas.

Our central telephone lines are open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday and from 9.00am to 12 noon on Saturdays.

The Covid-19 crisis has had a significant impact on many people’s finances. If you think you’ll have difficulty paying your mortgage, please remember we’re here to help. We may be able to support you with payment reductions, revised payment plans and mortgage payment holidays. So far we’ve helped over 600 members with a payment holiday.

You can learn more about our mortgage support on our dedicated Help & Support Hub. These pages provide practical guidance on mortgages as well as savings and insurance support, with useful information on how to protect yourself against fraud. You’ll also find a ‘challenging times’ section which brings together support and advice for customers who may be vulnerable in different ways.

If you’d like additional information, the government’s Money Advice Service has launched a money navigator tool to help people find the guidance they need if their finances have been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Throughout the challenges of recent months, I’ve been consistently uplifted and delighted by the compassion, commitment and understanding of my colleagues here at Leek United. At Board and executive level, we’ve been doing all we can to look after our staff, to protect their safety, to keep them informed, to keep their spirits high.

And we’ve all been working hard as a team to give special support to our members who may be vulnerable and in need of additional help during these most difficult circumstances. We’ve been directly helping as many of our elderly and vulnerable members as possible and we’ve also been fundraising and working with local charities and community groups who may be struggling at this time.

In addition, I’m delighted to share with you that we’re at an advanced stage in our preparations to establish a dedicated Charitable Foundation which will financially support hundreds of local charities and community groups. I look forward to sharing the details with you in due course.

The situation with Covid-19 continues to evolve. But one thing that remains constant is our commitment to supporting you, our colleagues and our local communities. We’ll continue to keep you updated on our website and on our social channels.

On behalf of everyone at Leek United, thank you for your continuing loyalty and support. Please stay safe and healthy.

With kindest personal regards.

Andrew Healy, Chief Executive
