Is your Bank ready to implement the Faster Payments Service? |
Date: 13/6/2008 |

With effect from 27 May 2008, a new ‘Faster Payments Service’ has been introduced in the Banking industry. The aim of this service is to reduce the amount of time taken for electronic transfers to be processed so that the money reaches the beneficiary’s account on the same day the request is made. This process will have a huge improvement on the current system where the standard processing time has been three working days. It is being supported by 13 of the UK’s largest banks and building societies although the system will be phased in at different times across the Banking industry. Here, at Leek United Building Society, with effect from the 27 May, we have been able to accept incoming faster payments, up to the value of £10,000, from any participating Bank. This means that if your Bank is ready to implement the Faster Payments Service, you simply contact them by telephone, or log onto your online banking system, and instruct them to pay an amount of money (up to £10,000) into your Leek United account. The money will then be transferred to your account the same day, providing all the information you supply is correct. Customers should contact their own Bank to ascertain whether they offer this service and, as each Bank may have its own limit as to how much they will allow their customers to transfer, enquire what the actual limit is. So, we are ready to receive payments into your account. The question is: Is your Bank ready to implement the Faster Payments Service? |

Leek United Announce Strong Results for 2007 |

Leek United’s 2007 annual business results announced this week “tells a Story” of strong business growth, in a year which saw unprecedented turmoilin the financial services markets. Financial and operational highlights presented to members at the Society’s Annual General Meeting held on Wednesday, 23 April 2008 included: ·Group Total Assets up 8% to £800m. ·Profits After Tax of £2.9m. ·Mortgage Balances up 7% to £641m. ·Savings Balances up 12% to £596m. ·Group Management Expenses Ratio down to 0.87%. ·Asset Quality very high, with mortgage arrears remaining at an historic low. Chairman, Eric Hodkinson, told members present at the Annual General Meeting that the figures were a “message of assurance and confidence in the strength of their Society”. Mr Hodkinson reported two aspects in particular. Firstly, mortgage lending growth had been achieved organically without the need to purchase mortgage portfolios. Secondly, costs are under control and evidenced by a further reduction in management expenses, which bought about a reduction in costs for the fourth successive year. Savers were also winners in 2007 benefiting from attractive rates and choice but without the “gimmicks” that can often accompany some products. Over 3,500 new accounts were opened by the Society during the year. In closing, Mr Hodkinson praised the Society’s management and staff. “It is their effort and achievement that lies behind our exceptional results and it is they who make sure that the Society does indeed deliver on its promises to members. |

Leek United Building Society calls on savers with 'lost accounts' |
Date: 19/3/2008 |

Leek United Building Society is today calling on savers who may have lost touch with their accounts to get in touch. Ahead of Government plans to give money in untouched accounts to charity, the Society wants to reunite as many people as possible with their money. If you think you have an account with the Society but have made no withdrawals or deposits for over 15 years, your account may be considered ‘dormant’, particularly if you have moved house and haven’t told us your new address. Under the Government’s proposals, this dormant money will be given to charitable causes. Whilst you will be able to revive your account or claim your money back at any time – with interest- - we would like to reunite as many of our members as possible with their money, before the scheme goes ahead in 2009. By contacting the Society you can easily reactivate your account. All you need to do is visit a local branch of the Society with your passbook or card. If you have lost your passbook or card, then bring along proof of your identity. Alternatively, you can call us on 0800 093 0002 or drop us an email - to savings@leekunited.co.uk. Commenting on the call to action, Keith Brightmore, Head of Savings & Insurance at Leek United Building Society said; “We are really keen to track down all savers who may have ‘lost accounts’ with us. We estimate around 130 accounts with the Society have not been touched for over 15 years and may therefore be included in the Government’s unclaimed assets scheme, which is due to come in in 2009. “There is no need to worry, as no member will lose any money or membership rights due to the new unclaimed assets scheme, but we are really keen to get in touch with the owners of this money – all of whom are still members of the Society. If you think you have an account with us, that you haven’t touched for a long time do let us know – the sooner the better. Don’t forget, if you are moving house, let us know your new address.” |
