Eco United

In May 2007, a group of the Society's staff formed the Eco United Committee.

The Committee's overall aim is to minimise any adverse effect that Leek United has on the environment whilst conducting its business activities.

Our objectives are to:-

  • promote awareness and the benefits of being environmentally friendly throughout the Society;
  • maintain a general principal of reducing waste and implement ways of ensuring this;
  • identify and target energy efficiencies throughout our office premises;
  • provide a source of research into the opportunities available to ‘Eco-friendly' practices;
  • monitor the introduction of new environmental legislation to ensure the Society is always compliant.

The Committee is pleased to report the following actions and achievements to date which are attributed to the commitment and awareness of Leek United staff:

increased our recycling by:-

Separating our waste paper, food waste and plastics and recycling these products wherever practicable.

All ink cartridges are recycled, as is our main electrical equipment, in line with appropriate regulations.

reduced our energy consumption by:-

Placing posters around our premises to remind staff to "switch off" lights and equipment when not in use, overnight and at weekends.

Introduced an automated system to switch off all pc's outside of our normal operating times.

Since 2006, when we started to monitor our electric usage, we have reduced our consumption in 2011 by 20%.

promoted ‘greener' ways of travelling by:-

  • Holding walk/cycle to work days several times a year.
  • Reducing the CO2 emissions level permitted when purchasing company vehicles.

being kinder to the environment with our paper use by:-

  • Using paper sourced from sustainable sources for all our mailshots.
  • Redesigning our maturity process to reduce the amount of paper sent out.
  • Use of a scanning process to electronically archive documents and reports rather than printing them.
  • Introducing double-sided printers in all our branch premises.
  • Re-using envelopes for all internal mail.
