History

The Leek United Permanent Benefit Building Society was established in 1863, becoming part of a burgeoning building society movement which saw hundreds of local mutual savings and loan organisations opening up across the country.

At the time of Leek United's incorporation there were almost 3,000 building societies.  Many of these were "terminating" societies which were wound up when all their members had been housed.

Commitment to independence

We changed our name to Leek United & Midlands Building Society in 1919 and to Leek United in 1990, but our progress through over 140 years of competition and industry consolidation has been made without recourse to merger or acquisition.  This is a remarkable achievement which demonstrates that our current commitment to serving members as an independent mutual building society has the strength of history behind it.

The 21st century finds Leek United unchanged in terms of its commitment to traditional mutual values but transformed by the application of technology and modern business methods - now more than ever before our members have easy access to great choice, value and personal service in mortgages, savings and financial services.
